All of the old DOS commands were coming back to me.į.Y.I. I did a couple of minor changes to the DOSBox options, so it would automatically mount the D:\DOSStuff folder as the virtual C: drive and change the command prompt drive letter to C. The installation was quick and straightforward. So I downloaded and installed the basic version of DOSBox. I was going to need to install DOSBox first.ġ6-bit error message inside of Windows 10 Sure enough, I got an error about running 16-bit applications. Now just for the sake of argument, I decided to see what would happen if I tried to run one of the install programs/scripts from a 64-bit Windows 10 command prompt. I then created a sub-folder called Temp and copied all of the DOS game folders I wanted from the Gravis disk to it. So I created a new folder in File Explorer on my D: drive named DOSStuff to use as the DOS root drive. The way DOSBox works is it creates a virtual DOS environment using an existing folder as the root DOS drive. There were only two ( 2) solutions that came to mind an MS-DOS Virtual Machine or a Personal Computer ( PC) emulator like DOSBox. Since the DOS games I wanted to play were 16-bit, the 64-bit version of Windows 10 I'm running wasn't going to do it. My next idea was, " It's not going to be easy to set up.". My first thought was, " Wouldn't be fun to go through a couple of levels of Doom?". It has a few DOS shareware games I used to love to play, including Doom. So the other day, I was going through some old CDs and came across a Gravis Gamepad disk from 1996. But you can still run your old DOS games using DOSBox. But it can be tough since Windows doesn't utilize DOS anymore. Big help.Sometimes it is fun to go back and play the DOS video games I grew up playing. Pete thanks you've cited some great info here. What that means is I'll probably take live recordings of myself playing these games on the older PC (versus monitor captures). I'm still probably going to get an older PC and dedicate it to these older games, though, for the sake of convenience. I'll submit a DOSBox PC run soon and see how the adjudication goes. I still have my old machines for that reason. WIN98SE is the only way to run those game IMO. I might have enough spare parts to build you one with 98. So - Windows XP runs DOS emulation too! I'll need a Windows 98 PC then. I know it's a Wiki quote and not a quote from Microsoft, but I buy it.

"In contrast to the Windows 9x series, the -derived operating systems developed alongside the 9x series (Windows, , and newer) do not contain MS-DOS as part of the operating system, but provide a subset of DOS emulation to run DOS applications and provide DOS-like command prompt windows ("DOS boxes")." -Wikipedia I'm lazy because all this was easy to find and I think it's pretty clear.
